Lynchburg in Fall: The Campus at its Most Finest

There's something in the air at the University of Lynchburg every autumn. Summer's heat fades away. A cool breeze takes its place. The sky seems bluer. Light turns golden. This is more than the weather. It's a transformation. While our campus is beautiful all year, it is in the fall that it truly shines. It is during this season that the university looks and feels its absolute best.
The first reason is simple: the view. Our campus becomes a painting. The green leaves on the trees change color little by little. They become bright red, fiery orange, and sunny yellow. These colors frame our historic buildings. Hobbs Hall and the Chapel look even more impressive because of this colorful backdrop. Walking across the Dell feels like taking a walk through an art gallery. Each path offers a different beautiful scene. It is a feast for the eyes.
This beauty is not just for pictures. It affects how we feel being around campus. The poet John Keats called autumn the “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness.” He was right. The fall season here is rich and gentle. It does not scream for attention like summer. It does not sleep quietly like winter. It simply invites us to slow down and look. It asks us to notice the world around us. A walk to class is no longer a rush. It becomes a small moment of peace. The falling leaves and the crisp air can calm a busy mind. This natural beauty is a gift to every person on campus.

But a pretty view is not enough. A season must also have a good feeling. And fall on campus has the best feeling of all. The energy of a new school year is still fresh and exciting. There is a sense of a new beginning. Everyone is starting new classes and meeting new people. The medium cool weather is perfect for this. Students are seen more outside. They talk with friends on the steps of Hall Campus Center. They take pictures posing beside the famous “LOVE” sign. They chat and study together under the colorful trees sitting on the keeper of memories, red chairs. They cheer for our soccer teams at Shellenberger Field. The campus is alive with activity and friendship. The writer F. Scott Fitzgerald once said that “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” You can feel that truth here. The problems of last semester are forgotten. Everything feels possible again.
Some individuals will argue for other seasons. They might say that spring is better. They love watching the first flowers bloom. They enjoy the fun of Springfest. And spring is really lovely too. But its beauty feels like a reward. It is a celebration for making it through the winter. The beauty of fall is different. It is not a reward for endurance. It is a welcome. It is a grand, colorful, and gentle welcome into the heart of the school year. It gives us its beauty right at the start, to carry us through the months ahead. In the end, autumn is the real version of our university. It shows us the school at its most beautiful and most alive. It combines the promise of a new start with the peace of a changing world. It is a season that supports us, inspires us, and reminds us to look up from our books and see the beauty around us.
So on your way to your next class, take your time. Listen to the sound of the leaves. Feel the cool air on your skin. Look at the golden light on the old stone buildings. You are not just walking to another lecture. You are experiencing the University of Lynchburg at its very best. You are living in its perfect season.
